Research of the potential integration of Urban Air Mobility (UAM) to the existing transportation systems in the region of Upper Bavaria (Oberbayern)

Duration: 2019

This project is managed by the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and has been awarded for the year 2019 to the following partners/research groups: Bauhaus Luftfahrt e.V., Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt, the TUM Chair of Modeling Spatial Mobility, and the TUM Chair of Transportation Systems Engineering.

The project overall goals are:

• Simulating urban air mobility scenarios in the region of Upper Bavaria, including medium (2030) and long-term (2050) time frames

• Analyzing the challenges of this service’s integration at different levels: technology, vehicle, safety, regulations, etc. and summarizing the possible solutions for these

• Assessing possible business models for the service

• Evaluating the advantages and disadvantages of the integration of this service to the existing transportation systems and the impacts of the service on the social, economic, and environmental levels

• Discussing the results within the UAM Initiative Ingolstadt (https://www.ingolstadt.de/UAM) and identifying future research needs in the areas of technology and infrastructure, operations, regulations, and society. The results will be discussed in a final conference at the end of the year 2019. These will have a direct impact on the stakeholders to assess the potential of this new service, notably in Oberbayern.
